Detecting Leaks - Outside Your Home Edition

Detecting leaks in general can be difficult especially if you don’t have the right equipment or don’t know where to start. Detecting leaks outside can also be worrisome and can go unnoticeable for long periods of time. A few methods on how to detect leaks outside your home involve several methods such as:

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for areas with standing water, damp soil, or unusually green patches in your yard, which may indicate a leak.

  2. Water meter test: To confirm their is a leak, a great way is by checking your water meter. If you aren’t sure where your water meter is located, call your local water company for help. Turn off all water appliances and note the water meter reading. Wait a few hours without using any water. If the meter changes, there might be leak.

  3. Soil Moisture sensor and/or water monitor systems: There are devices that alert you about moisture levels in your yard as well as devices you can hook up to you home’s water meter that will notify you about potential leaks in your home.

Have you heard of Flume? Flume is a smart home water monitor that features a waterproof and battery-powered sensor that fastens to your home’s water meter and continually monitors water usage and detects leaks both indoors and outdoors. This new technology connects with your home’s Wi-Fi network and can communicate with you through your smartphone.
